Rom-com themed cocktails to love, laugh, and probably even cry with

Movies and cocktails go hand in hand like romance and comedy. That’s why we’ve made these rom-com themed cocktails so you can enjoy them all simultaneously!

Love and comedy are two things that simply make people feel good, so when you add those two things together in the form of a rom-com, it’s pretty much all the goodness you could hope for. Even if you may shed a few tears along the way. Despite the overplayed tropes and often infuriating character choices, rom-coms remain some of the most watchable and enjoyable movies that pretty much guarantee you’re going to leave with a smile on your face.

The Razzle Margarita – ’13 Going on 30′

13 Going on 30 made a generation of girls excited to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving,” while also making them appreciate the amazing things about their youth. It’s Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo at perhaps their most lovable, and it’s one of the movies on this list that still makes me smile the most.

For this cocktail, I wanted to recreate the “razzle red” that Jenna and Matty are always talking about in a really fun drink that the newly 30-year-old Jenna Rink would have gone crazy over. The result is an extra sour raspberry margarita that you won’t want to put down when it’s time for your “Thriller” dance routine.

13 going on 30 cocktail, razzle

Ingredients

  • 1oz tequila
  • 1oz raspberry sour puss
  • 1oz lime juice
  • 0.5oz Grand Marnier
  • 1 cup of raspberries
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1 tsp simple syrup (add more if desired)
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Salt

Recipe

  1. Make a cut in the center of a lime wedge and run the wedge along the rim of a glass.
  2. Dip the glass in a plate of salt to create your salt rim.
  3. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until combined.
  4. Pour the blender’s contents into your glass.
  5. Garnish with lime wedge.

The Cher – ‘Clueless’

Everything about Cher is iconic, but few things are as synonymous with Clueless as the yellow plaid blazer and skirt ensemble that she dons at the beginning of the movie. This rom-com cocktail is based around that epic outfit, and will also give you that ever important Vitamin C that Cher is always preaching about. It’s both sharp and sweet, just like our girl Cher.

Ingredients

  • 1oz vodka
  • 1.5oz orange juice
  • 1oz Grand Marnier
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Ice

Recipe

  1. Squeeze chocolate sauce into your glass in a checkered pattern. I went around the rim once leaning the glass one way and squeezing four times, and then did the same leaning the glass the other way.
  2. Add vodka, orange juice and Grand Marnier to your cocktail shaker and shake with ice.
  3. Strain your drink into your chocolatey glass.

Benadryl on the Rocks – ‘Hitch’

You really can’t think about Hitch without seeing Will Smith’s huge swollen face from his surprise allergic reaction. When Hitch mentioned that Benadryl, which he sipped with a straw, would be great on the rocks, I thought maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea. Not literally, of course. This strong, yet surprisingly drinkable cocktail really captures that cough syrup taste, but in a good way if you can believe it!

Note: To be consumed only in the moments that take your breath away.

The ‘I’m Drinking to Forget Sarah Marshall’ – ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’

This Forgetting Sarah Marshall rom-com themed cocktail will transport you to the tropics where you can forget about all your troubles. Unless, of course, your troubles happen to also be in the tropics. At the same resort. In the very next room. Then it might be more difficult.

This piña colada is served in a coconut, so it doesn’t get much more tropical than that. That being said, you do get bonus points if you add one of those tiny umbrellas to really capture that resort feeling.

The Berry-more Slammer – ‘The Wedding Singer’

Not only is the Alabama Slammer Glen’s drink of choice, but it’s also one of the quintessential ’80s cocktails, which is perfect for The Wedding Singer! As a tribute to Drew Barrymore, we’ve added more berries (get it?) to this classic cocktail! Lose the cherry and add some blackberries, which give the added benefit of complimenting the sloe gin in this rom-com cocktail.

The Time-osa – ‘Always Be My Maybe’

For the Always Be My Maybe rom-com cocktail, I’ve paid homage to the strange restaurant where Keanu Reeves performed some of his best work to date: Crying while listening to and eating a meal that “played with the concept of time.”

This drink does just that by celebrating the entire life cycle of an orange, from stem, to mere zest. The prosecco elevates the whole experience and makes each part of the cycle a happy affair. Feel free to record the sound of you squeezing the orange and listen to it while you enjoy the drink along with Always Be My Maybe!

  • 1.5oz orange juice
  • 0.5tsp orange zest
  • Prosecco
  • 1 orange wedge
  • 1 orange stem

Recipe

  1. Add orange juice and orange zest to your glass. Top with prosecco.
  2. Garnish with orange wedge and stem.

The ‘I Carried a Watermelon’ – ‘Dirty Dancing’

Admittedly, Dirty Dancing is a little light on the “com” part of a rom-com, but that’s honestly super impressive considering how laughable ’80s movies can feel today. This movie holds up incredibly well, and it deserves an entire watermelon full of cocktail to celebrate it!

This vodka-infused watermelon pays tribute to one of the most comedic moments in Dirty Dancing, when Baby infamously asserts that she earned her access to the staff party by carrying a watermelon. Invite your friends over and enjoy Patrick Swayze’s epic moves with this rom-com “cocktail”!

dirty dancing cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1 watermelon
  • 1 750ml bottle of vodka

  1. Cut a hole the size of the vodka bottle’s neck near the center of the watermelon. Keep this as a plug for later. Scoop out enough watermelon so that the neck will fit.
  2. Place the vodka bottle into the hole and secure it with the bottle upside-down. Let it rest at room temperature for at least 12 hours.
  3. Cut your watermelon into slices or blend with ice and serve.

The Princess Sophia – ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’

One of the scenes in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days that stresses me out the most is when Andie connivingly makes Ben miss the final moments of the basketball game to go get her a Coke, and then a Diet Coke! This cocktail is a “frosted” cherry diet coke, to incorporate both Ben’s diamonds and a little bit of tartness. Of course, the cocktail’s name is Andie’s pet name for Ben’s…cocktail?
